Hands-free music via BCI at the BCI Game Jam.

How It Works

The project lets users interact with a song by selecting between “intense” and “chill” audio-visual effects using BCI input. Instead of relying on a keyboard, mouse, or controller, the system captures brain-based commands and uses them to change the feel of the music in real time.

Brain DJ was built using two connected parts: a Unity application for training and capturing BCI input, and a TouchDesigner project for playing the song and switching between effects. Together, these tools created an interactive performance system where brain activity could directly influence the music experience.

Why It Matters

This project is a great example of how BCI can move beyond traditional lab settings and into creative applications like music, games, and live performance. By combining EEG, Unity, TouchDesigner, and real-time interaction design, Brain DJ shows how accessible neurotechnology can open new ways for people to engage with digital media.
